Greece hit by 6.4-magnitude earthquake, says USGS

The quake struck just southeast of the village of Palekastro on the island of Crete.

The quake struck at 05:07 local time (02:07 GMT) on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicenter was located about 10 kilometers (6 miles) southeast of Palekastro, a village on the eastern tip of Crete.

The quake had a depth of about 10 kilometers (6 miles).

There are no immediate reports of any damage or injuries.

The quake was felt across the island of Crete, as well as in parts of mainland Greece.

The USGS has issued a yellow alert for the quake, which means that there is a moderate chance of damage.

Residents of Crete are being advised to stay indoors and away from windows.
